about

Liner Notes:

Since you’re holding this precious disc, you are enlightened. You don’t need the usual liner notes. You know the kind, where an Official Jazz Historian discusses the aesthetic linkages between this music and its Hallowed Forbears, dropping names and dates and record labels. Notes that are full of what Barbara Lea called “Sounding Like.” [Insert my long derisive sound here.] What I would rather tell you in this little space is deeper. Come closer. The dead never go away, although they leave their bodies behind. We feel their spirits around us. And their music. Not just their records. The sounds made by musicians in the Twenties and Thirties reverberate in our ears and hearts like birdsong, like the sun's warmth. Time never was beads on a string, and art never progressed from Primitive to Subtle, improving all the way. No flow charts, just flow. So I know those dear shades approve (present tense intentional) of the music the Hot Jazz Alliance creates. The sweet expert lyrical raucousness contained (barely) on this disc pleases them mightily. Alex Hill says, “Ain’t It Nice?” and Doc Poston grins as the Hot Jazz Alliance sends its love. So do Jack Purvis, Frank Melrose, Tommy Rockwell, and George Stafford. Now, play this record on your new Brunswick Panatrope and enjoy the lyrical-mystical experiences. Just imagine!
